About
Nancy Mellon is an artist, a wife, a
mom, a grandmother and a friend. In her youth she was an actress. Later as a
homeschooling mom to her 2 boys, she got to use her creativity in many ways.
She is
happiest when she can activate her goof ball persona.
When the
pandemic hit, the Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery closed down. In December
2020, Nancy retired from the job she loved, coordinating the gallery and
planning art events. Which was a good
call because in May 2021, she had a mild heart attack. In August 2021, she was
diagnosed with Parkinson's. Her symptoms
for the last 2 years have included rigidity, fatigue, slowing down of movements
and vocal loss at times.
Color, humor, community and stories imbue the visual art
Nancy creates. The mediums she has played with and hopefully will start playing
with again as her energy comes back: run from fine art mediums of paint, clay,
colored pencils and ink; to felt and yarn, paper and cardboard; to plastic
Honey Bear containers and crushed cans.
In the not so distant past, she has been a Curator for the
YSAC Permanent Collection, a Gallery Coordinator for the Yellow Springs Arts
Council, an Art Events Coordinator and her favorite-a Jafagirl with her art
partner Corrine Bayraktaroglu.
In the more distant past,
she graduated from the Goodman School of Drama of the Art Institute of
Chicago.
After reading all of Anais Nin's diaries and with her
permission, she and her husband, Steven Deal wrote a one woman play about Anais
Nin. Nancy also wrote and performed a
one woman play about women of the Civil War.”
As a dear friend assured her, when she worried about not
doing any art lately “You are an artist in your soul.” Nancy felt that was a
very comforting thought. Thank you for
visiting her blog.
